Sports facilities

General:

With the opening of the school year and children return to the courts at schools and community centers, experts at the Standards Institution of Israel have summarized a number of safety points for basketball hoops in order to raise users' awareness about the hoops and their typical problems.

There have been a number of failures of basketball hoops and accidents in the past, especially outdoor hoops, when the basketball poles collapsed, sometime even causing fatal accidents.

Tips on the safe use of basketball hoops:

  • Israeli Standard SI 5515, Part 1 – Sports Equipment: basketball equipment – functionality and safety specifications and test methods exists for various basketball hoops. A Ministry of Education circular and the requirements of the Sports Administration require testing pursuant to this standard. The Standards Institution of Israel or a laboratory accredited to this standard shall test every facility once a year.
  • Identify typical flaws in a faulty basketball pole
Look at the hoop and try to see if it is properly strengthened:
    1. The hoop base – check if there are cracks in the concrete to which the facility is attached.
    2. Hoop pole – check if the iron pole is rusted or rotten.
    3. Hoop backboard – check if it is cracked.
    4. Hoop rim – verify that there are no signs of rust, cracks, sharp or prominent edges that can catch the players' fingers
    5. Attention: check the hoop more frequently if the basketball hoop is placed near a water source, such as near the sea, regularly irrigated grass, or in an area with high humidity, which will accelerate wear and tear.
    6. Sharp parts or cracked surface on the court near the hoop.
  • If one of the flaws is found, it is prohibited to use the hoop and the school management or local authority shall be alerted.
  • Search for the yellow label on the basketball hoop. In the past few months, the Standards Institution of Israel has labeled hoops, indicating that it has tested the hoop once a year and that the hoop conforms to the standard. Check the last date on the hoop label, and the next inspection date in particular. Further information is available by scanning the label code.

Sectors/products tested:

  • Obtain a standard label for the hoops, separation curtains, etc.
  • Inspections following the first installation and periodic inspection of sports facilities pursuant to the series Israeli Standard SI 5515 and its parts for the following facilities: hoops, goalposts, rims, volleyball, gymnastics, separation curtain (divider), and ladders. The inspections are performed on the courts.
  • Outdoor sports and fields at the order of the customer.
  • The industry inspects synthetic grass football pitches used for sports activities and football pitches pursuant to FIFA specifications.
